This is an aerial view of the San Andreas Fault at Carrizo Plain, California, USA. It clearly shows the straight linear gully trace left by this famous transform fault on the surface, surrounded by gentle undulating arid hills covered with sparse drought-tolerant vegetation. As the boundary of the Pacific Plate and North American Plate, the San Andreas Fault is over 1200km long. The Carrizo Plain section is the most well-exposed and completely preserved segment of the fault, a classic field site for geological research. The whole landscape is vast and desolate, showing the amazing power of tectonic movement.
