Mount Vesuvius Crater Overlooking Naples Bay Italy

This aerial photo taken by National Geographic in 2007 shows the huge crater of Mount Vesuvius in Italy. The layered volcanic rock walls are clearly visible, with the coastal urban agglomeration of Naples Bay and blue sea in the distance. Mount Vesuvius is a famous active volcano, whose eruption in 79 AD buried the ancient city of Pompeii, a world-renowned geological landscape.
